What the license does
- Authorizes commercial work: A license proves the contractor has met state requirements to perform or manage the construction, removal, repair, or improvement of commercial buildings.
- Establishes contractor class: There are three classes of licenses, with specific limitations on the monetary value of projects you can perform.
- Class A: For projects with a contract value of more than $750,000.
- Class B: For projects between $120,000 and $750,000.
- Class C: For single projects under $9,999 and with no more than $150,000 in total annual contracts.
- Ensures legal compliance: In Virginia, a contractor must be licensed to obtain permits for commercial projects.
Benefits of having the license
- Increased project opportunities: The primary benefit is being able to legally and professionally work on commercial projects that are often larger and more lucrative.
- Demonstrate credibility: A license is a sign of legitimacy and professionalism, which can give potential clients confidence in your abilities.
- Allows for bidding: You must have a commercial contractor license to bid on commercial jobs in Virginia.
- Provides legal authority: The license gives you the legal authority to perform a wide range of services, including construction, remodeling, and repair of commercial and some residential buildings.
